Fairtrade and Fairmined Gold Jewellery

Fairtrade and Fairmined gold jewellery is a brand new story, another to add to our ‘fair’ collection alongside non-Burmese rubies and fairly (not minimum) paid adult labour.

So what does Fairtrade and Fairmined gold mean? It means that the people who mine the gold – just like Fairtrade farmers of coffee or tea – get a decent price for the raw material. It means it’s mined using safe working practices including the management of toxic chemicals, such as mercury and cyanide which can be harmful to both environment and miner. It means that measurers are in place to avoid that children under the age of sixteen are not employed to work in dangerous conditions: Fairtrade and Fairmined gold provides small-scale miners in developing countries the opportunity to improve their living and working conditions.

You will be paying a little extra for jewellery made from Fairtrade and Fairmined gold, so that small-scale miners and their communities can benefit from its sale with a minimum guaranteed price, and you’re also providing better living and working conditions for them.

Launched earlier this year, Stephen was one of the first jewellers to sign up, and is now amongst the few businesses in the UK licensed to use this precious commodity. After trying to be as ethically sound as we could be for the last sixteen years, it has finally become possible for us to use a certifiable, Fairtrade and Fairmined dual stamp. And we hope you will agree that this is a ‘result’!

We are currently offering our Liquid Slim ring and Liquid Extra Slim ring made from Fairtrade and Fairmined gold. If you're interested in having a different jewellery piece from Stephen's collection made in Fairtrade and Fairmined gold please contact us.
