Jewellery Care

How Do I Look After My Stephen Einhorn Jewellery?

We hand make all of our jewellery using solid precious metals and we do not plate our designs. We advise you to take good care of your jewellery by doing the following:

When you wash your hands remove your rings as particles from soaps may become lodged in the gaps.

Fine Jewellery

Jewellery made from precious metal will scratch and wear over time, especially if it comes into contact with a similar or harder material. It is important that you take special care when wearing your fine jewellery.

Avoid wearing it in situations where it may get damaged easily such as whilst doing domestic or manual jobs or when using exercise or sporting equipment. It may even get damaged if knocked against a ring on your other hand whilst clapping.

When not wearing your fine jewellery keep it in a safe place such as the Stephen Einhorn jewellery box that it came in. Always store your items of jewellery separately from each other. This is particularly important if you have diamond jewellery, as one diamond is hard enough to scratch another.

Avoid any kind of contact with bleach or cleaning products and never wear jewellery when swimming.

Prevent your jewellery from coming into contact with hair spray, deodorants and perfumes and be aware that pharmaceuticals, narcotics, alcohol and some foods can adversely affect the pH balance in your skin. In some instances this may cause a reaction with sterling silver, accelerating the tarnishing process.

We encourage you to bring your jewellery back to us every year for professional servicing. Our Stephen Einhorn jewellers will take time and care to inspect your jewellery in order to determine the service that needs to be provided.  If it is necessary you will receive an estimate for any work that may need doing. We will provide the service as soon as you validate the estimate. For more information please contact our London shop at shop@stepheneinhorn.co.uk or phone us on +44 (0) 20 7359 4977.

Sterling Silver Jewellery

Regularly give your sterling silver jewellery a good hand polish with our specialist silver jewellery cloth made from high quality cotton impregnated with a silver cleaner and anti-tarnish agent. This cloth is designed for dry-use and should remain effective as long as it is not washed.

If your sterling silver jewellery hasn't been worn for a long time it may become oxidised and tarnish. (An interesting note is that the oxidisation process happens because there is sulphur in our air, pre the Industrial Revolution silver didn’t tarnish nearly so much). If this happens it can be cleaned using our silver jewellery cloth, or it may require a professional clean and polish by our specialist jewellers as part of our re-vamp service.

We encourage you to bring your jewellery back to us every year for professional servicing. Our Stephen Einhorn jewellers will take time and care to inspect your jewellery in order to determine the service that needs to be provided.  If it is necessary you will receive an estimate for any work that may need doing. Soft gemstone jewellery - such as any piece of jewellery made with emerald, pearl, opal, moonstone, labradorite, amazonite, coral, turquoise and any porous gemstones or any gemstone with a sure hardness under 7 - is of a more delicate nature and therefore requires special care.

Clean your soft gemstone jewellery using our jewellery cloth designed for dry use.

We advise that you do not leave this type of jewellery in direct sunlight, dry heat or overly humid conditions and avoid getting it wet.

Soft gemstones are also sensitive to strong chemicals like hair sprays, deodorants and perfumes - which can discolour them.

As the surface of the gemstone is soft, store this type of jewellery separately so that it does not get scratched.

Pearl Jewellery Care

Pearl jewellery, being of a delicate nature, requires special care. Therefore it is important that you use the following care instructions:

Don't leave your pearls in direct sunlight or dry heat.

Pearls are sensitive to strong chemicals like hair sprays, deodorants & perfumes which can discolour them, so always put your pearls on last when dressing and take them off first when undressing.

As a pearls surface is soft, store your pearl jewellery separately to other jewellery, and store it in its original packaging.

Do not allow your pearls to get wet, as this will rot the thread and weaken it considerably.

If your pearls are worn often you should return them to us to be professionally re-strung at least once a year. This does incur a restringing charge.

We encourage you to bring your jewellery back to us every year for professional servicing. Our Stephen Einhorn jewellers will take time and care to inspect your jewellery in order to determine the service that needs to be provided.  If it is necessary you will receive an estimate. We will provide the service as soon as you validate the estimate. If this service is needed please contact our London shop at shop@stepheneinhorn.co.uk or phone us on +44 (0) 20 7359 4977.

Thames Wood Jewellery

We have developed an impregnation and sealing technique to protect our rare 2000-Year-Old Thames Wood. Whilst every effort has been made to preserve the rare oak used in our fine jewellery, it will require extra special care. We advise you to follow these Thames Wood care instructions:

When choosing your jewellery, take your activities into consideration. It is preferable to avoid wearing any jewellery to the beach, swimming pool or to play sport, gardening etc, so as to avoid knocking or scratching it.

Avoid immersing your 2000-Year-Old Thames Wood jewellery in water or liquids e.g. whilst washing up, washing hands, bathing, showering, etc. Do not allow it to come into contact with any domestic or industrial cleaning agents and do not use a wet type silver cloth, silver dip or jewellery dip.

To clean your 2000-Year-Old Thames-Wood jewellery use a jewellery cloth that is designed for dry use on the metal, avoiding any wood sections, or send it to us for a professional clean.

Try not to leave it in strong direct sunlight as this may lighten the colour of the wood.

Make sure you take reasonable care when wearing your precious jewellery with Thames Wood and avoid wearing it in situations where it may get easily damaged.

As jewellery made with our 2000-Year-Old Thames Wood is relatively soft it will scratch and wear over time, especially if it comes into contact with harder metals such as steel, stone and concrete etc.

Our Thames Wood has survived 2000 years of history and with the right care it should continue to last. The best way to think about your Thames wood piece is this: look on this purchase in the same way that you would look on the purchase of an expensive watch with a leather strap. Occasionally you have to replace your strap through wear and tear. This may be the same for your Thames Wood piece. Occasionally the wood may need to be repaired or replaced. If this is the case please contact us.

We encourage you to bring your Thames Wood jewellery back to us every year for professional servicing.

Leather Jewellery

Your leather jewellery has been handmade using natural leather by our onsite jewellers.

You may notice some slight imperfections and variation in tones to your leather however this is to be expected with a natural product and simply adds charm and uniqueness to your piece.

We recommend that you avoid wearing your leather jewellery in the shower or whilst swimming as contact with water, perfumes, chemicals and skin/hair oils can alter the colour of the leather and this may result in colour transference. You may wish to avoid wearing the leather against fragile or light coloured clothing as colour transfer can occasionally happen.

Excessive moisture such as perspiration can also affect your jewellery so please take care when wearing your jewellery and be sure to remove it when exercising or when you are in a hot climate. Water (or any moisture) can damage and weaken your jewellery.

We encourage you to bring your leather jewellery back to us every year for professional servicing.
