Signet ring questions

Which hand does a signet ring go on?

By tradition, the hand you do not write with, so the left for most people. There is no rule beyond that. If your left hand already carries a wedding ring, the little finger of the right hand is the usual choice.

Which way should a signet ring face?

Most people wear it with the design facing outwards, so it reads the right way up to the person opposite. If you are unsure, ask us when you order.

Can a woman wear a signet ring?

Yes, and women always have. Every signet we make can be worn by anyone. The Small Signet (10 x 10mm face), the Small Oval and the Slim suit smaller fingers. See our women's signet rings.

Can you wear a signet ring with a wedding ring?

Yes. Most people wear the signet on the little finger and the wedding ring beside it on the ring finger. If the two feel crowded, wear the signet on the other hand.

Can a signet ring be resized?

A plain metal signet can usually be resized in our workshop; rings with a stone or London Oak face may not be. If the size is wrong, contact us. Pieces that are not a Custom Option can be exchanged for another size within their size range; our Guarantee page has the full terms. Ask us about resizing after that.

What is usually on a signet ring?

Initials, a family crest or coat of arms, or a seal cut in reverse so it prints the right way round in wax. Some people choose a stone or enamel face instead, and many wear the face plain. Inside the band, a date or a motto. Initials are priced when you add engraving on the product page; crests and seals are quoted individually.

How long does a signet ring take to make?

If your size and metal are in stock, it leaves within three working days. If not, we make it for you in our workshop, which takes about four weeks. Engraving can add time. If you need it by a date, call us on +44 20 7359 4977 before you order.

What age do you get a signet ring?

There is no set age. A signet is often given for an 18th or 21st birthday, and many people buy their own later. If it marks a birthday, have the date engraved inside the band. For gift ideas, see our jewellery gifts for him.
