Jeweller's hands making a silver inlaid pendant with lapis lazuli stone

Historical Significance

Silver signet rings, alongside gold and platinum, have a long and illustrious history, one we wanted to be a part of here at Stephen Einhorn. Ancient Egyptian people used ‘Seal Rings’ as a form of authentication,  whilst Greek and Roman and dignitaries used them to sign, seal and authenticate documents, as well as making their signet rings more decorative and ornate to show off their status. Later, throughout Europe through the middle ages and into the Renaissance, crests were carved into these rings as a further sign of belonging and position.

Cultural Symbolism

During the 18th and 19th centuries and into the 20th, signet rings became more about fashion and less about authentication. More people could read and sign their names by then so their usefulness wanes, but not the desire to won them. The Victorians, ever a sentimental bunch, started sealing love letters with them, and even gifting them as intimate tokens: they have always represented so much more than simply a beautiful piece of jewellery.

Modern Signet Rings

Where once they were symbols of authority and identity for families of a certain class, now they have evolved into something more equitable, fashionable, and inclusive. We encourage people to invent their own markers, find their own tribes, and express their individuality through signet rings. Everyone deserves a crest: a symbol of belonging, we don’t think that men's signet rings or women's signet rings should belong to a particular class or culture. Why not design your own?

‘We wanted to create a modern and timeless version of this traditional ring.  Maintaining what we thought was good about this long existing ring design. We wanted to add to it, and  give it more subtlety of shape, weight and form to make it truly unique and ours’
