Wooden rings, wedding rings and necklaces made with oak from Roman London, roughly 2,000 years old, set in solid silver, gold or titanium: rich, warm wood against bright metal. We make every piece by hand in our own workshop at 210 Upper Street, Islington; most jewellers have pieces made overseas, we make ours here. Real wood asks for more care than metal, so this guide covers how durable it is and how to look after it, as well as which piece to choose.

Oak from Roman London

Every piece in this collection is made with oak from Roman London, roughly 2,000 years old. We shape the oak, protect it with an impregnation and sealing technique we developed, and set it in solid silver, gold or titanium in our workshop at 210 Upper Street. It is a natural material, so no two pieces of wood are alike: the grain and colour of yours will be its own, a little different from the photographs. A wedding ring is worn every day, so choose a wooden one knowing the wood needs more care than metal: it comes off for washing and showering, and it may need servicing over the years. Are wooden rings durable?

Yes, with care. Our London Oak has survived 2,000 years and with the right care it should continue to last, but on a hand, day to day, it needs more looking after than metal. Four things to know before you choose yours.

It is real wood

London Oak is relatively soft. It will scratch and wear over time, especially against harder materials such as steel, stone and concrete. Slip it off for the beach, the pool, sport and gardening.

Keep it out of water

Do not immerse it in water or other liquids: take it off for washing up, washing your hands, bathing and showering. Keep it away from cleaning products.

Like a leather watch strap

Think of it as you would an expensive watch with a leather strap: now and then the strap needs replacing. Occasionally the wood may need to be repaired or replaced.

Bring it back once a year

Bring it in and we will inspect it and tell you what, if anything, it needs. If work is needed you receive an estimate, and we do it once you approve it.

Wood and silver, gold or titanium

Cool silver or warm gold? The metal decides the colour against the wood, the weight and the price. Every precious metal piece we make is assayed and hallmarked.

Silver

Most London Oak pieces start in sterling silver, the lowest price for each design, and its cool shine sets off the grain. Silver is softer than gold and tarnishes slowly with wear; clean the metal with a dry cloth, away from the wood.

9ct or 18ct gold

Yellow, rose or white gold on many pieces, often made to order: warm on warm. 9ct is 37.5% gold, 18ct 75%.

Titanium

Offered on the two Geo Ellipse rings. Light, hard and quietly grey: a good choice for a wedding ring worn every day.

Silver with a gold river

Measure on a ring of the same width

A wide band fits tighter than a narrow one in the same size. If you measure at home, use a ring of a similar width to the one you are buying, at the end of the day.

Are wooden wedding rings durable?

Yes, with care. Can I wear a wooden ring in the shower or wash my hands with it on?

No. Avoid immersing London Oak in water or other liquids, including washing up, washing your hands, bathing and showering. Take it off first: a small habit that keeps the wood looking its best. If the wood looks damaged, contact us on shop@stepheneinhorn.co.uk or +44 20 7359 4977.

How do I clean London Oak jewellery?

Clean the metal with a dry jewellery cloth, keeping it off the wood, or send it to us for a professional clean. Do not use cleaning products, a wet silver cloth, silver dip or jewellery dip. Keep it out of strong direct sunlight, which may lighten the colour of the wood.

Can the wood be repaired or replaced?

Is London Oak bog oak?

No. Bog oak comes from trees that fell into peat bogs and lay there for thousands of years; much of what is sold is Irish. London Oak is oak timber from Roman London, roughly 2,000 years old. Both are ancient oak and can look alike at first glance, but they come from different places.
