Engagement rings, wedding and commitment rings, unisex jewellery and a Pride bracelet, for gay, lesbian, bi, trans, queer and non-binary customers, same-sex couples, and everyone who loves them. We opened in 1995 wanting to be the jewellers for our whole community, and our website has had a section for gay and lesbian couples since it launched in 1997, eight years before civil partnerships existed. The section is bigger now and the language has grown. The point hasn't: everything here is made in our Islington workshop for whoever is standing in front of us.

Why we have this section

In the 1990s our gay friends told us they were made to feel unwelcome buying the rings that mattered most to them. So when our website launched in 1997 it had a section for gay and lesbian couples, the first jewellery site we know of to have one, eight years before civil partnerships and seventeen before equal marriage. In 2018 someone asked whether it was still needed. It is. A purchase like this shouldn't be spoiled by a narrow-minded sales assistant, and there are still countries where being yourself is a crime. The section is bigger now and the language has grown to LGBTQIA+, but the reason is the same. Everything here is made in our Islington workshop by people who share our values, and that Pride weekend we gave 10% of our sales to Stonewall.

Nothing here is labelled his or hers. Signets with a stone, enamel inlaid by hand, diamonds if you want them. About half the couples who come to us have already decided together; the ones who propose with a ring buy the style first and come back together for the size.

Do your rings have to match?

No. Of the couples who buy two rings from us in one order, about seven in ten choose the same design, most at two widths or in two metals, and three in ten choose two different rings. All three work, and sizing is separate either way.

Design them together

Two rings, made for two people, in one workshop

About half the couples we make rings for come in before anyone has proposed and design both rings together, in the shop on Upper Street or over Zoom. The other half buy the style first, propose, and come back together for the size or a change of stone. Either way the rings are made a few metres from where you chose them, by the people you spoke to, and two sizes of the same ring is standard, not bespoke.

Ring size is the reason people hesitate. Here's how to get theirs without asking, what happens when there are two of you, and which hand.

Their size, without them knowing

Borrow a ring they wear on that finger and measure the inside across with a ruler, press it into a bar of soap, or send us a photo of it on a ruler. Or order the nearest size: an unworn ring can be exchanged within 14 days. (Confirm: free, or customer pays return postage.)

Two rings, two sizes

Order both in your best guesses. We'll exchange or resize whichever is wrong; rings we've made are resized under our lifetime service guarantee. (Confirm the resizing terms and any charge.)

Which hand?

In the UK most couples wear engagement and wedding rings on the left ring finger, and most same-sex couples do too. Some choose the right hand, as is usual in Germany, Spain and much of Europe, or a different finger. It's a preference, not a code. Tell us the finger and we'll size for it.

Your questions

Do gay couples wear engagement rings?

If they want to, and most do. In one survey of 500 same-sex couples, 83% proposed with a ring; of the couples who come to us, Stephen puts it at about 95% buying rings for the engagement, with a few choosing matching pendants instead. There's no rule. Both of you can wear one, one of you can, or you can skip straight to wedding rings.

Who proposes in a gay or lesbian relationship?

Whoever wants to. In the same survey about a third of couples did a double proposal, each asking the other, and one in ten of those exchanged two rings. Plenty of couples decide together and then choose the rings together, which is how about half of ours arrive.

Do both of us get a ring?

That's yours to decide. What we see every week: one ring for the proposal and two for the wedding; two engagement rings; two rings chosen together with no proposal at all. If you buy one now and one later, we'll match the metal and the finish.

Which hand do gay couples wear wedding rings on?

In the UK almost everyone wears it on the left ring finger, and most same-sex couples do too. Some wear the right hand, as is normal in Germany, Spain and much of Europe, or a different finger altogether. It's a preference, not a code. Tell us the finger and we'll size for it.

Do you exchange rings in a civil partnership?

You can, and most couples do, but a civil partnership ceremony has no legal requirement for rings or vows. Our wedding and commitment rings are made for civil partnerships, marriages and couples who want neither.

Do our rings have to match?
