Birthstone Jewellery
Birthstone necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings set with real stones in solid silver, gold and platinum, made by hand in our own workshop at 210 Upper Street, Islington. Most jewellers have pieces made overseas; we make ours here. A birthstone is a colour chosen for someone - deep red, cool blue, soft pearl - so find the month first, using the UK list below, then choose the piece. Where we do not list a stone, we can set it to order.
What is my birthstone? The UK list by month
The UK has its own list, set by the National Association of Goldsmiths in 1937. It differs from the American list in a few months, and most jewellers here mix the two. Where a month has two stones, both are correct - so choose the one you love.
January and February
January: garnet. February: amethyst. The UK and US lists agree.
March and April
March: bloodstone, or aquamarine (the US list puts aquamarine first). April: diamond, or rock crystal.
May and June
May: emerald, or chrysoprase. June: pearl, or moonstone; the US list adds alexandrite.
July and August
July: ruby, or carnelian. August: peridot, or sardonyx; the US list added spinel in 2016.
September and October
September: sapphire. October: opal, or tourmaline; the US list names pink tourmaline.
November and December
November: topaz; the US list adds citrine. December: turquoise, or lapis lazuli; the US list adds tanzanite (2002) and zircon.
Birthstones by month: January to June
Find the month, then the pieces we make with that stone as a choice on the product page. Where we have none, the stone is made to order on request.
January: garnet
Garnet is usually a deep, wine red, but it comes in other colours. We set tsavorite, a vivid green garnet, in our small signet and in the eyes of our skull pieces. A red garnet is made to order on request.

February: amethyst
Purple quartz, from pale lilac to deep violet. The Bardot ring takes a large hand-cut amethyst or lilac amethyst - a ring to be noticed; our skulls and cufflinks take small amethyst eyes.

March: bloodstone or aquamarine
Bloodstone is the UK stone: dark green flecked with red, hand cut and inlaid in our signet pieces, where it looks quietly handsome. Aquamarine, first on the US list, is made to order on request.

April: diamond
The hardest stone, and the one we set most. Nearly every piece of ours with a stone option can be made with a diamond. It goes with everything.

May: emerald
Our Lioness ring can have emerald eyes, and our Roundhaus earrings set emeralds among other coloured stones for a small flash of green. Other pieces with emerald are made to order on request.

June: pearl
The one birthstone that is not cut from rock. We string and set freshwater, Akoya and South Sea pearls, in white, grey, pink and peacock. Dress them up or down.

August and November have no stone on our product pages yet; we make them to order. December is where the UK and US lists part company most.
July: ruby
Rich red corundum, the same mineral as sapphire. Most of our pieces with a stone option can be set with a ruby.

Olive to lime green, bright in summer light. We do not list a piece with peridot; we set it to order on request, as we do sardonyx, the UK alternative, and spinel, added to the US list in 2016.

September: sapphire
Usually blue, from cornflower to deep navy. Our heart, halo and charm pieces take blue sapphires. Black sapphire is a sapphire too - many of our skull pieces use it for the eyes.

October: opal or tourmaline
Opal is the UK stone; pink tourmaline is on the US list. Our Roundhaus ring sets pink tourmaline among other coloured stones - match or clash as you like. A piece set with opal or tourmaline alone is made to order on request.

November: topaz or citrine

Turquoise is the UK stone and lapis lazuli the UK alternative; we inlay hand-cut lapis in our signet pieces and the Trust bracelet. Tanzanite is the US December stone, added in 2002, and is not on the UK list; our Tsarina pieces are set with it. Turquoise is made to order on request.

Family birthstone jewellery: one stone for each person
The birthstone piece people ask for most carries the whole family: a stone for each child or grandchild, with room to add more later. We do not make a standard multi-stone ring; instead, these are the ways we do it.
A charm for each child
One charm per person on a bracelet or necklace, each set with that person's stone or engraved with a name or date. Add a charm when the family grows, and the piece grows with it.

The same piece, one stone each
One design made for each person in their own month's stone: a Dainty Heart necklace for a mother and each daughter, or a small signet for each son. Matching, but each their own.

Our Roundhaus pieces set several coloured stones side by side, a small cluster of colour. A piece with your family's stones is made to order: tell us the months and we will say which stones and sizes will work.

Real stones, set by hand in London
Much of the birthstone jewellery sold in the UK is plated, and set with crystal or glass. Ours is solid silver, gold or platinum, set with the stone named on the product page, by hand in our own workshop at 210 Upper Street. Every precious metal piece is assayed and hallmarked. If the stone you want is not listed, just ask - we will tell you whether it suits the piece, what it costs and how long it takes.
Personalised
A name or a date as well as the stone
The stone gives the month; engraving adds the person - a name, initials or the date. We engrave by hand in our workshop, on the face of a signet, the back of a pendant or the inside of a ring. Styles are shown and priced on our engraving page.

What is my birthstone in the UK?
On the UK list, set in 1937: January garnet, February amethyst, March bloodstone or aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June pearl or moonstone, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October opal or tourmaline, November topaz, December turquoise or lapis lazuli.
Which is the right birthstone for March, June, October, November and December?
Both are. The UK list gives an alternative for several months, and the American list, which many UK jewellers also use, adds others: aquamarine for March, alexandrite for June, pink tourmaline for October, citrine for November and tanzanite for December. So choose the stone you love to look at.
Is tanzanite a December birthstone?
On the American list, yes: it was added in 2002. The UK list gives turquoise, with lapis lazuli as the alternative. Many people now choose tanzanite for December, for its violet blue; our Tsarina pieces are set with it.
Can I wear a birthstone that is not my month?
Yes. The lists were drawn up by jewellers, in the United States in 1912 and in the UK in 1937, and they have changed since. Wear the stone you like - or the stone of someone you love.
Can you set a birthstone you do not list?
Often, yes. Most of our pieces with a stone option are made to order, and stones such as peridot, topaz, opal, aquamarine and turquoise can be set on request. Can I add a stone later for a new child or grandchild?
Yes, on a charm bracelet or necklace: each person has their own charm, set with their stone or engraved, so a new charm can be added at any time. The piece grows with the family.

Yes. Each piece is set with the gemstone or pearl named on the product page, in solid silver, gold or platinum, not plated metal with crystal or glass.
How long does a birthstone piece take, and can it be engraved?
Pieces set with stones take four to six weeks to make, plain pieces about four weeks. Most can also be engraved by hand in our workshop; styles and prices are on our engraving page. For a ring, we can post a ring sizer on request.
